What is Water Pollution?
Thousands of dead fish were found in the Sengkarang River channel in Pekalongan Regency, Central Java (1/3/2021). The number of dead fish resulted in a blockage in the water pump used to drain water to the Pencongan River. The death of the fish is thought to have been due to contamination by waste that was deliberately dumped into the river. According to residents of Sipacar Village in Pekalongan Regency, the waste from washing the batik and jeans clothing industry is the reason. In fact, the residents’ wells have become smelly.
Waste discharged into the river can cause water pollution that disrupts the animal ecosystem in the waters and the survival of the community nearby.
“Well, what is water pollution?”
Water pollution is the event of the entry of substances or other components that enter and damage the waters. The cause that we often encounter is industrial waste. Industrial waste that is not treated first and disposed of carelessly into the waters is very dangerous. The water ecosystem will be disturbed if it is contaminated with waste. It can even cause death in aquatic animals. The danger of water pollution can also have an impact on humans. Because, waste can contaminate human water sources that are absorbed from the ground. Polluted groundwater sources, resulting in a lack of clean water sources that will hamper human activities and living things that live around them. If the water source has been polluted, it will cause problems in the form of health problems or a source of disease for humans, animals and plants. Pollution also makes the aesthetics of the environment not beautiful. Because, it will smell bad and uncomfortable to look at.
Our awareness is crucial for overcoming and controlling water pollution. How about the form of water pollution control? There are many forms of control and we can do it together, including:
- Do not litter
- Reducing the intensity of household waste
- Carry out environmental maintenance around the river by planting trees
- Construction of stabilization ponds and wastewater treatment plants for sewage treatment companies, and much more.
Water is very useful for our life. And we are responsible for protecting and caring for the waters. Because if not us, who else?”
